We value the environment

The Jebsens Group endeavors to instill respect for the environment in all levels of the organization. The Group has two dedicated departments – the Quality Assurance (QA) and Safety Sections – who issue environmental protection policies and procedures, focus on conformity with industry best practices and continuously search for ways to improve processes onboard and onshore.

The Group endorses the efforts of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to ensure “safer shipping and cleaner oceans” by its adherence to IMO’s various conventions including MARPOL 73/78, OPRC 1990, the HNS Protocol and the London Convention – all of which are included in the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. All Jebsens vessels have Safety Management Certificates, assuring compliance with environment protection requirements and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.

In addition, Jebsens was awarded the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) Document of Compliance (DoC) for proven safety and quality management processes embedded in our Quality Assurance System, ensuring safe ship operations and pollution prevention and in conformity with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the ISM Codes.

Pollution Prevention Policy

“We respect the environment and will make every effort to protect it.” Pollution is an increasingly serious world problem. It is the Company’s policy to conform to all relevant international and national requirements, laws and regulations with regard to environmental protection. It is essential that all personnel contribute actively to protecting the environment and that all must understand the importance of taking action within their area of responsibility to prevent pollution. The extensive training of staff, communication of information and ongoing maintenance of vessels and equipment are crucial in our efforts to prevent pollution.

The following areas are also identified as vital to pollution prevention:

Implementation and practice of relevant Contingency Plan and Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan and Garbage Management Plan Extensive training of shore and ship personnel.

Well-maintained vessels and equipment. Daily pollution prevention, e.g. spill prevention, waste handling and contaminated water control.

Pollution prevention exercises on board carried out at least once a month.

Pollution prevention is a line responsibility where the Master or the onboard management shall implement the instructions issued by the Ship Management offices. The Master shall review these instructions annually for their relevance to the particular type of vessel and trade in which it is engaged.

The Ship Management office has issued a Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP) for each vessel under its management. The SOPEP are approved by the respective classification societies and/or the Flag Administration.
